Our Annual Pre Season Look at the NFL

NFC NORTH

GREEN BAY PACKERS

This year’s Green Bay Packers team is as deep a roster as Mike McCarthy has had in his tenure in Green Bay. Another bounty from the draft has yielded Ha Ha Clinton- Dix (S/ Alabama), WR’s Davante Adams (Fresno St.) and Jeff Janis (Saginaw St.) and TE Richard Rodgers (Cal). Each of these draftees (along with LB Carl Bradford) figures to see the field this year.

They join a team that has had a great run of success and now look to push it to the next level. Aaron Rodgers is fully healed from a broken collarbone and has been scintillating in pre-season. Jordy Nelson, Randall Cobb and Jarrett Boykin are a formidable top 3 in WR’s and as if that wasn’t enough the Pack boasts maybe the best stable of RB’s in the NFL. Eddie Lacey enters his second year and has rocketed up the fantasy boards and rightly so. With a year under his belt and nothing to prove in camp he enters the regular season primed to go. His running mates James Starks and DuJuan Harris each has a differing style but will be no less effective coming off the bench. The Packers offense is a Top 3 offense easily and will put points up on the board. A ton of points on the board.

But for this year’s team to have any shot the defense has to keep them off the board. For the Pack to move on in January the run stop defense has to get better. Losing NT B.J. Raji will hurt so the load now falls to FA Letroy Guion and UDFA Mike Pennel to man the middle. 2 year player DE Datone Jones has looked impressive and needs to carry that momentum into the year. He and Mike Daniels have been swallowing up runners at the point in the exhibitions and with the addition of Julius Peppers it should be fun to see exactly how Dom Capers utilizes the talent on the defense.

Last year’s Safety ills were addressed in two key moves – Clinton- Dix was taken in the 1^st round and playmaking CB Micah Hyde was moved to the S slot. Hyde has size, good hands and is a sure tackler. That should take the load off Morgan Burnett. Sean Richardson has rebounded completely from neck fusion surgery and brings some thump to the back end of the D.

The CB’s welcome the return of ball hawking Casey Hayward, lost last year to a hamstring injury. He rejoins Sam Shields and Tramon Williams, and with Davon House along with rookie Demetri Goodson this is one of the Packers deepest positions on the roster.

There is no need to discuss the Super Bowl – yet. The Pack opens on Thursday against the defending champs in Seattle, the home of the infamous Fail Mary. While the outcome of the game is far from critical, the Packers get the chance to make a statement early. This team is built on youth and is built to last.

Ted Thompson and Mike McCarthy have cobbled together an impressive lineup. Injuries to the key elements will play a role but on paper this team can and will go a very long way.

Chicago Bears

Marc Trestman enters year 2 without Brian Urlacher and Julius Peppers. As Peppers went to Green

Bay in another intra-divisional move DE Jared Allen jumps from Minnesota to the Windy City. The Bears also passed on Clinton- Dix to take CB Kyle Fuller ahead of Green Bay in the draft. The Bears have concerns at both the CB and S position and the gutting wrenching last minute crushing defeat at the hands on the Packers in last year’s finale will be hard to shake.

Big armed but temperamental and sometimes very inaccurate QB Jay Cutler is back along with Alshon Jeffery and Brandon Marshall. With their size they make an imposing pair of WR’s and with RB Matt Forte the give the Bears a good offense. FA signings Santonio Holmes and Josh Morgan give Cutler plenty of targets, but also plenty of opportunities to throw another untimely pick. Forte will have to shoulder a large load to keep the Bears in the hunt.

Lance Briggs and Shea McClellin lead a defense that has more question marks in the backfield than answers. Gone is the aging Julius Peppers whose contract hit was too stiff for the Bears to absorb and the Bears brought in the aging Jared Allen from Minnesota to replace him. CB Kyle Fuller was the Bears top draft pick but that will do little at the S slot with the likes of Ryan Mundy and Danny McCray in the middle. The Bears will put up points and get after the QB. Their hopes ride on a defense that will have to get after the QB to make things work.

PREDICTION –

9-5 2^nd Place NFC NORTH Out of Playoffs

DETROIT LIONS

Fear the Lion. That has become the beaten-to-death battle cry in the Motor City for the past 5 years. Gunslinging QB Matthew Stafford will be a fantasy owner’s prize but he alos throws some ugly picks. With an unusual sidearm slinging motion Stafford can miss the mark wildly at times. His main target remains Calvin Johnson, a giant among the little people. Big TE Eric Ebron (#10 overall/ North Carolina) gives Stafford a big target in the middle and the Lions can put Brandon Pettigrew out with Joseph Fauria to give the Lions a very deep TE position. Neither Golden Tate nor Jeremy Ross complements Johnson well so Megatron will see a lot of double and triple covers.

The biggest addition is the replacing of volatile coach Jim Schwartz with Jim Caldwell who hopes to bring some discipline to a Lions team with a penchant for penalties. The Lions have a history of breaking form the gate early only to fade down the stretch. Ndamukong Suh will be Caldwell’s biggest challenge if the Lions hope to get back to the playoffs. Gone is Cliff Avril and Ziggy Ansah has to make improvements to help the Lions line. The Motor City Kitties are suspect at the CB and S positions and in the pass-happy NFC North may have difficulty with the Likes of Rodgers and Cutler throwing on them.

Caldwell will help but it won’t be enough. He simply doesn’t have enough weapons.

PREDICTION –

8-8 3^rd Place NFC NORTH Out of Playoffs

MINNESOTA VIKINGS

The Vikings are at it again. 2 years removed from drafting the savior-of-the-month Christian Ponder

they have drafted their next savior-of-the-month Teddy Bridgewater on their ongoing quest to find a QB. Matt Cassell was brought in and couldn’t win the job. Ponder is on thin ice. Things have gotten so bad that Joe Kapp and Tommy Kramer were invited to camp to compete for the QB job.

All of this is sad as the talents of sure fire Hall of Famer Adrian Peterson are wasting languishing in a moribund Viking offense. Things won’t get much better this year. T Matt Kalil is a stud and WR Cordarelle Patterson is a potential star with breakout possibilities. He teams with former Packer Greg Jennings but little else is to be feared from the Vikings offense this year.

The loss of DE Jared Allen to Da Bears will hurt the Vikes defense. There is such a paucity of defenders in Minnesota the Vikes could be making tee times by the time the snow flies in Minneapolis sometime around October 1.

The Vikings do have a chance however. If Aaron Rodgers, Eddie Lacey, Jordy Nelson, Jay Cutler, Brandon Marshall, Matt Forte, Matthew Stafford and Calvin Johnson should all simultaneously come down with the same flu the Vikings have a slim chance. Barring that it will be yet another long and frustrating season in Minnesota.

But they should get decent tee times and a pretty good place in the draft where they can search for their next savior-of-the-month.

PHILADELPHIA EAGLES –

We’re believers. Chip Kelly has gassed DeSean Jackson and did a masterful job in keeping the Birds offense running high all year. LeSean McCoy will be atop the headache charts for defensive coordinators again. Can Nick Foles go through another 2 INT season? Doubtful. Can the Eagles soar again? Definitely.

11-5/ 1^st Place NFC EAST/ Playoffs

WASHINGTON REDSKINS –

How long will it be before Kirk Cousins will become the object of the fans desires? Will RG3 come back from knee surgery? Is he for real? Question marks abound in DC as they muddle thru the campaign. Alfred Morris is durable but when a team has as many holes defensively the future isn’t bright. Odds are great that Washington finally changes its’ team name before they make the playoffs.

NEW YORK GIANTS

You know that sad, pouty face Eli Manning makes when things aren’t going his way? The New York Post should be able to make quite a collage of them by the end of this season. The once staunch defense is in tatters. The running game is zilch and the O line was awful. The Giants dove deep into free agency but in the immortal words of Jim Mora that doesn’t mean diddly- poo

DALLAS COWBOYS –

Jerry didn’t take Johnny Football? With his man-love for Tony Romo Jones is betting on a guy who has never won a playoff game and has not proven he is worthy of his megabucks deal. The D is decimated with the loss of LB Sean Lee and the Cowboys explore new depths under Jones’ stewardship. The best move Jones could make is to fire the team’s GM – himself. That isn’t gonna happen.

NFC SOUTH

New Orleans Saints

Drew Brees ignites a potent Saints offense yet again. His eye popping fantasy numbers will carry the

Saints a very long way. Can it cover a defense that hasn’t been the same since Bountygate was exposed? Offensively the Saints are all world. Their defense has to keep the other team off the board to have a shot.

CAROLINA PANTHERS

What was that blue blur that stormed thru the second half of the NFL season last year? It was a Panther express led by QB Cam Newton and LB Luke Kuechly. The defense is for real but the offense has to find some targets for Newton.

ATLANTA FALCONS

What to make of the Dirty Birds. Are they a high flying prolific offense or vastly overrated? Is the defense enough to win an inter-divisional game? Is Mike Smith on the hot seat? Is Matt Ryan The Man? Was the king’s ransom they paid for Julio Jones too much and they’re just finding out? These plot lines make for a compelling story line in HBO’s “Hard Knocks” but are the things that they need to sort out in Atlanta.

TAMPA BAY BUCANEERS

Rah Rah Greg Schiano and his high school shenanigans have been booted in place of Lovie Smith. Quick – name the Bucs starting QB. If you said Josh McCown who outplayed Jay Cutler in Chicago last year you’d be right. Michael Johnson (DL) comes from Cincy but the Bucs are still mediocre.

SEATTLE SEAHAWKS

Give ‘em credit. Not only did Russell Wilson shut everyone up and prove he could play Richard Sherman backed up his mouth with his game. So good was the ‘Hawks defense that the NFL stepped in once again after Sherman and Co. beat the snot out of Peyton Manning’s receivers and put skirts on all WR’s making it virtually impossible to play defense anymore. With CB Marshawn Lynch, S Earl Thomas and Kam Chancellor the ‘Hawks are still formidable on defense. But no one repeats in the Super Bowl. Or do they?

SAN FRANCISCO 49ers

Have the Niners peaked? Now that Colin Kaepernick has been locked into a long term deal has the future become now because come next year they won’t be able to afford anyone else? Frank Gore is showing signs of not being the back he once was. For all his accolades Kaepernick has not yet proven he can win a game with is arm. Add Jim Harbaugh’s disputes with the front office into the mix and it looks a lot like Dallas – West. But with a far better lineup. Just watch out for Arizona.

ARIZONA CARDINALS

Pity the poor birds. Last year they went 10 – 6, knocked off Seattle AND San Francisco and still didn’t qualify for the playoffs, a bitter pill considering the Packers mark of 8-7-1 got them in. The D is becoming a true force in what has become the toughest division in the NFL. But to be successful QB Carson Palmer has to cut down the picks. Close… but no cigar.

St. LOUIS RAMS

Such high hopes after a good draft year. The front four on D is tough- everyone is a first round pick. But that became moot when QB Sam Bradford was lost for the season to a knee injury. The sacks will come; the points will be more difficult. Time to draft and groom a replacement QB.

NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS

The only things certain in life are death, taxes, and Bill Belichick leading the Pats to the playoffs. QB

Tom Terrific (Brady) is at the helm but for how much longer? There is improvement in the division but not enough to unseat the Patriots. CB Darelle Revis makes Bah-ston his latest stop on his world tour. They make the dance but how long will it last?

MIAMI DOLPHINS

Just when it looked as if Joe Philbin had the Dolphins going in the right direction Richie Incognito and Jonathon Martin took the team into a new realm of bullying in the work place. Ryan Tannehill continues to grow but Philbin is feeling the heat of having to deliver a winner. Close… but not there yet.

BUFFALO BILLS

The Bills vastly overpaid to trade up for WR Sammy Watkins in the hopes he would develop instant chemistry with QB E.J. Manuel. The pre-season was hardly pretty. The Bills have a good but not great D and have given away more than they could afford to land Watkins who may, in time, become a good receiver in the NFL. He isn’t there yet and neither are the Bills.

NEW YORK JETS

There’s a lot of noise coming from the Big Apple and as usual it’s being made by Rex Ryan and not by the team on the field. Ryan has to do something this year to get the Jets back. It is not happening. QB Geno Smith was good, at times, but most often he was maddeningly inconsistent. Gang Green may be what ultimately does Ryan in.

INDIANAPOLIS COLTS

The Colts will need a lot of Luck to become one on the big boys of the AFC. In a conference that is suddenly pale in comparison to the NFC the Colts could be the big breakthrough team this year. Yes, they got hosed on the deal with Cleveland for Trent Richardson but with Andrew Luck at the helm the ship is pointed in the right direction.

TENNESSEE TITANS

No more Chris Johnson. The blazing RB got the big bucks and coasted his way out of Memphis to the Jets. QB Jake Locker looked good in pre-season, but that is just pre-season. He needs to keep the Titans shaky D off the field. Mediocrity rules!

JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS

The Blake Bortles watch has officially begun. How long will it take for the #3 pick overall to take over a team mired in woefulness? The Jags brass says he’ll sit all year and learn. Harrumph. A few losses in and the fans will be clamoring for him.

6 -10 3^rd Place AFC SOUTH

HOUSTON TEXANS

J.J. Watt. Jadaveon Clowney. Okay, they have a decent pass rush. But who can throw the ball? RB Arian Foster looks more beat up each season and that will happen when he’s been forced to carry the franchise on his shoulders. The Texans will get another high pick this year. Maybe it’s time for a real franchise QB?

CINCINNATI BENGALS

If any QB in the NFL will benefit more from the new rule changes than Andy Dalton please raise

 

your hand. Dalton’s lack of a big arm will be offset by his short game accuracy. Now Dalton doesn’t need to hit A.J. Green on a bomb; he can dink and dunk with the best of them. RB Giovanni Bernard had a breakout year and will head the running game. Marvin Lewis has carved out a tough defense and the Bengals are out to prove they can win a playoff game.

BALTIMORE RAVENS

The D has been revamped. Joe Flacco returns. Ozzie Newsome still heads one of football’s savviest front offices. Ray Rice has a two game hiatus for spousal battery. Torrey Smith is still fast and John Harbaugh is the better of the two brothers as a coach. The more things change, the more they stay the same.

PITTSBURGH STEELERS

Any hope the Steelers had of returning to the playoffs went up in smoke when #’s 1 & 2 RB’s Le’Veon Bell and LaGarrette Blount were pulled over for blazing up on the way to a preseason game. Bell’s words to the cop citing him were “I didn’t know you could get a DUI for being high.” Well… you can. And he did. And you can also be suspended by Roger Goodell. And he will. Mike Tomlin has a long year in front of him even with a revamped D.

CLEVELAND BROWNS

Johnny Football? Try Johnny Bench. The Johnny Manziel watch is on and it is as scintillating as watching water freeze and the Brownies implode. We’re not buying the Manziel hype. He’ll need to show more than some after-hours parties, an annoying money rub of the fingers and a middle finger to prove he belongs in the show.

DENVER BRONCOS

The Broncos and John Elway have mortgaged the future to give Peyton Manning one last shot. The uber-physical Seahawks showed Manning’s magnificent arm is no longer what it used to be. His hyper active tippy-toeing masks the fact that Manning can no longer hit the out route back shoulder throw with authority. The NFL, ever so accommodating to Sir Peyton, has once again altered their rules after Manning’s receivers were manhandled in a Super Bowl. It’ll be a good regular season and an early exit this year.

KANSAS CITY CHIEFS

This team has been coming on and will soon pass the Broncos. QB Alex Smith has found a home and mentor with offensive minded Andy Reid. The Chiefs D played well above their heads last year but with the number of All Pros don’t overlook the Chiefs. Jamal Charles, Tamba Hali and Justin Houston who is still negotiating make KC imposing. But the O Line needs to plug the leaks and the WR’s need to show up.

SAN DIEGO CHARGERS

Philip Rivers is still the QB. Vincent Jackson has been cut. Antonio Gates star is setting. Time to go into rebuild mode in SoCal.

8 – 8/ 3^rd Place AFC WEST

OAKLAND RAIDERS

James Jones has joined Charles Woodson and GM Reggie McKenzie as imports from Green Bay. McKenzie has a good foundation but is forced to start young Derek Carr at QB. The hope is he doesn’t get crushed the way his brother David did in Houston when he was rushed into service too soon.

WILL THE TREE BEAR FRUIT?

Packers Defense Looks to get Younger, Meaner, and More Athletic (Again)

San Francisco and Seattle. Seattle and San Francisco.

These two teams have become a veritable thorn in the side of the Green Bay Packers and DE Mike Daniels made sure everyone heard what he was saying. Prior to camp even beginning Daniels took it upon himself to challenge his teammates. After hearing the dreaded ‘finesse team’ description of the Packers Daniels boiled over.

“We're grown men. We play a violent game. We get paid to be violent.” Said Daniels in June. “ So why not? If you deck somebody in the locker room because you have a disagreement, there's not going to be any sensitivity training.

"It's a barbaric sport. It’s a violent game played by violent men. So that's how you're going to have to approach it. I'm tired of getting our face punched in by other teams. I'm not used to that."

Daniels introduced himself by getting 6.5 sacks last year and a few NFL linemen have just crossed

him off their Christmas card list. GM Ted Thompson dipped into the seldom used waters of free agency to add Julius Peppers from Chicago and NT Letroy Guion (GUY-on) from Minnesota. Peppers is an athletic freak and has been coveted by Dom Capers since his days in Houston. Capers campaigned loudly to select Peppers 1^st overall but the Texans nabbed QB David Carr instead. After waiting over a decade Capers finally got his man. Guion is a former first round pick and may now see significant paling time now that B.J. Raji has been lost for the season to a torn biceps.

But Peppers won’t be used exclusively at DE. He’ll be all over the field and the preseason gives no indication as to how Capers plans to deploy Peppers at his new OLB position opposite Clay Matthews. If Aaron Rodgers is Da Man in Green Bay then Matthews is Da Other Man on defense. As Rodgers goes, so goes the offense.

The same can be said about Matthews. His value to the Pack cannot be understated. His thumb was broken twice last year and he is eager to get back in the fight. Pairing him with Peppers makes the Packers pass rush all the more imposing. But without Matthews there is a tremendous drop off altogether. The well-worn woes of the safety position have been beaten to death. Will someone back PLEASE make an interception and get the monkey off your backs?

Mike McCarthy has already etched in stone “Our defense will be better.” He aid virtually the same thing about the running game and last year the Pack’s running game not only was better but at times looked dominating. The first team unit looked impressive in pre-season in bottling up the Rams Zac Stacy and is playing with more fire and passion. All of that is a moot point. The young guns have to show up and produce. So how does this defense get better and who is going to get them there?

Out with the old, in with the new. Gone are veterans Ryan Pickett and Johnny Jolly while former 2^nd

round pick and oft-injured Jerel Worthy was dealt to New England for a conditional draft pick.  The message is clear - the future is now for the kiddie corps. Datone Jones is in year 2 after spending most of last year hurt and learning how to play the Okie end in the Packers 3-4 scheme. At UCLA Jones was athletically gifted but in a 4-3 hybrid D he could go after the QB. In the NFL he had to learn how to be a space eater, occupy 2 OL and let the LB’s fly to the ball. In pre-season he has looked quicker and stronger than last year. The Pack will need him to become a force, especially now that NT B.J. Raji has been lost for the season to a torn biceps. Raji had looked outstanding until he was injured and in a one year ‘show me” contract the future is anything but certain for the former #9 overall pick.

Daniels has already stepped up and now has to back it up. The Nose Tackle position suddenly became wide open after Raji went down so Letroy Guion, the Free Agent signing from Minnesota is already natural fit. At 6’4” Guion has the size for the nose tackle and the hope is he can resurrect his career in Green Bay. This also creates room for UDFA Mike Pennel who has stood out in camp. Rookie Khyri Thornton along with second year man Josh Boyd will also see time. Julius Peppers and Mike Neal are officially listed as outside linebackers but they, too, could see time on the line as they are both converted from the DE slot. But with only 6 linemen it would not be a surprise to see TT go after another DL once the cuts across the board are announced. In a pinch Ryan Pickett’s phone might be ringing.

(6) – D. Jones, Guion, Daniels, Thornton, Pennel, Boyd IR – Raji PS – Carlos Gray

LB’s

This is a sight – the Pack is loaded with talent at the LB position both inside and out. There will be

some bodies cut that will hook on elsewhere. Of the starters Clay Matthews, Julius Peppers, A.J. Hawk and Brad Jones return but Nick Perry and Mike Neal won’t be going anywhere. But now comes the logjam.

Carl Bradford was a 5^th round pick and last year’s IR’d rookies returning are Nate Palmer and Sam Barrington. Barrington and Bradford have a hell-bent-for-leather style and are big hitters. The returnees from last season Jamari Lattimore and Andy Mulumba are both NFL caliber LB’s. The star of camp has been UDFA Jayrone Elliot who became a sack master in preseason, at one point racking up 3 sacks in 4 plays against the Rams. His performance has not slowed down either as he piled up another sack against the Chiefs and will grab a spot. If there is one thing Thompson and McCarthy’s approach has proven it is you find players where you find players. No team in the NFL gives the UDFA a better shot at making the team than the Packers. This year Elliot is that player.

Meshing the pieces together gives defensive coordinator Dom Capers a bevy of weapons to deploy. Neither Matthews nor Peppers has ever played with as imposing a counterpoint opposite their position. Just how Capers will deploy Peppers and Matthews makes the price of a ticket a bargain. Expect multiple looks and multiple packages. Individually the numbers might not be as high but as a unit this defense has the tools to shine.

CB’s

It wasn’t too awful long ago that the Pack’s corners were awful. Tramon Williams has settled that

position and Charles Woodson’s contributions on and off the field cannot be measured. Sam Shields struck gold with an off season contract and the corner spot in Green Bay looks set for a while. Davon House made huge strides last year and should be even better with another year removed from a shoulder injury.  Rookie sensation Casey Hayward is back after missing last year with a hamstring injury. Hayward’s return cannot be underscored enough as to his contributions. Hayward has a nose for the ball and with 6 picks as a rook he has much to prove. This may be Williams’s last year in green and gold with his age now pushing 30. Rookie Demetri Goodson is a unique case. A former basketball star Goodson switched to football and has tremendous athletic ability and could keep a roster spot as he probably won’t clear waivers. If the Packers are looking to the future, which they always do, they will not quit on Goodson quickly. With the depth and talent longtime special teams ace and sometimes CB Jarrett Bush just may be squeezed out. But if the Pack goes with only 2 QB’s Bush may be back in.

The ugly red-headed step child of the defense has doesn’t have a monkey on its collective back; a silverback gorilla has taken up residence. It will stay put until a Packers safety comes away with an interception, and until that ahppens the whispers will be “uh oh, what’ wrong with our safeties? “The woes of the safeties from last year are an ugly eyesore that has to be addressed. Somehow TT and MM got their man in the drafty when S Ha’Sean (Ha Ha) Clinton- Dix was still available at 21 when the Packers gobbled him up in a flash. Clinton- Dix is widely regarded as the S with the best overall talent in the draft. He isn’t the biggest or the fastest or the best ball hawk but he has no appreciable hole in his game.

Before Clinton- Dix could even lace them up the Pack’s brass set about rectifying the issue internally by moving CB Micah Hyde over to the S slot. Hyde will see much of the filed this year as McCarthy has said, “We have to find ways to get [Hyde] on the field.” Hyde is a solid tackler and has deceptive speed to go along with enough size that he can drop down into the LB’s position. In nickel formations Clinton-Dix will likely play centerfield while Hyde becomes the nickel back to go with incumbent Morgan Burnett.

Burnett has to rebound. The Packers safeties had zero interceptions last year. Burnett also had his

fair share of missed tackles. Moving Hyde will help but one of camp’s pleasant surprises was the solid play and hitting from Sean Richardson who looks fully recovered from neck fusion surgery. Burnett, Hyde and Richardson lessen the pressure on Clinton- Dix to be the savior of the D. Now the results have to show up on the field.

SPECIAL TEAMS –

Absolutely no surprises or camp battles here. LS Brett Goode, P Tim Masthay and K Mason Crosby are locks now and for the foreseeable future. Crosby rebounded last year to regain the form he had been missing when he was struggling. All Goode does is make a perfect snap every time while Masthay has been routine in pinning opponents back.

Mike McCarthy has said “Our defense will be better.” He said the same thing last year about the Packers running game. We believe McCarthy.

This could be a memorable, enjoyable year.

PACKERS HIGH FLYING OFFENSE SET TO TAKE OFF

 

With the start of the 2014-15 NFL season and the opener against the Evil Empire in the Emerald City looming just around the corner we, like the Green Bay Packers, are back.

Summer’s swelter has seen very large men toil in the heat and soon all will change. The kids will be back in school. The air gets a little chiller at night. Leaves begin to turn and collect on the ground. The crack of the bat meeting a ball will now be replaced by the whack of shoulder pads hitting at a high rate of speed.

Yes, football is back!

And with it the Packers are ushering in one of their deepest rosters in Mike McCarthy’s tenure. Gone are some familiar faces; WR James Jones was allowed to leave and landed in Oakland, while DL Johnny Jolly and Ryan Pickett are unsigned free agents. The seismic crack in the universe occurred when GM Ted Thompson uncharacteristically went shopping and picked up DL Letroy Guion and Da Bears Julius Peppers. While Peppers is 34 with questions surrounding how much he

has left he is an athletic freak who will not be required to play as many downs in Titletown as he did in the Windy City. Guion is a former first rounder who never quite found his footing on a wretched Viking defense but hopes to resurrect his career in Green Bay. Perhaps there is some irony in the fact that TT raided the shelves of two of the Pack’s most hatred rivals.

Peppers aside this year’s team has an unlimited ceiling. The offense is a Top 5 offense easily. The Packers can go far into the playoffs provided one thing.

As long as Aaron Rodgers stays healthy.

The draft looks on paper to be another fine crop imported by TT. At the top of the list is S Ha Ha Clinton-Dix from Alabama and the battle at the safety spot after last year’s well-documented disaster is as fierce a battle as there has been in camp. TT went after pass catchers after losing Jones and picked up WR’s Davante Adams (Rd 2/ Fresno St), Jared Abbrederis (5th Rd/ Wisconsin) and Jeff Janis (7^th Rd/ Saginaw St Div 3). While selecting TE Richard Rodgers from Cal raised some eyebrows no less than the likes of another Rodgers from Cal has been heard saying “I can’t believe he (Richard Rodgers) lasted until the 3^rd round.” R Rodgers has been the talk of camp with his ability to snag almost anything Aaron has dished up.

The Packers also addressed the need for a C in picking up Corey Linsley (5^th Rd/ Ohio St) while taking athletically talented but raw DB Demetri Goodson in the 6^th.

As we open the season we’ll take a long look at the depth and make our annual prediction as to who is going to be around when the dust settles.

QB’s

Write this one down and save it: “As long as Aaron Rodgers stays healthy.“ That encapsulates the Packers this year. Keeping Rodgers healthy and upright has always been a priority but after breaking his collarbone and missing 8 games that saw the Pack struggle no single item on the agenda is greater than keeping 12 in the game. As he hits his prime fully recovered Rodgers is the best QB in the game today. He has precision sharp in the preseason and looking over his array of weapons the season can’t get here fast enough. Rodgers has always played better with a chip on his shoulder and he is coming into this year’s campaign with a lumberyard in its place. After hearing the pundits place the hosannas on Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, Drew Brees and Andrew Luck Rodgers has something to prove - again – and is looking to make a statement which will send every defensive coordinator batty trying to combat Rodgers’ talents. With the new “Can’t Touch This” rule prohibiting DB’s from literally any contact Rodgers will be licking his chops as this rule will most decidedly tip the game in his favor.

The starter in GB has never been an issue. Even backup hasn’t been an issue. Prior to last year there have been more presidents (4) that Packers have had starting QB’s (2), and Bill Clinton, W and Obama will have each served 2 terms each. While other teams struggle to find even a decent QB (hello, Minnesota? Cleveland? Houston?) Green Bay fans have been spoiled with Rodgers and Brett Favre leading the charge since ’92 of the last century. Favre will finally enter the ring of honor next year when he will also enter the Hall of Fame and should rightfully be welcomed home for all he did while a Packer and not how he exited.

Green Bay didn’t struggle; they flopped when Rodgers went out. Last year’s rookie Scott Tolzien

showed promise but played mostly like a rookie in emergency starts. Matt Flynn found the bucks in free agency but no home and was brought back to engineer one of the most stunning wins when he rallied Green Bay from a 1,836 point deficit against Dallas last year. Matty Ice is back and he and Scott Tolzien are battling it out as the #2. Flynn is the clear #2 but Tolzien has shown he can play in pre-season. But can Green Bay keep 3 QB’s? Can they afford not to? Or is Tolzien likely trade bait? We don’t see Tolzien clearing waivers (hello, Minnesota? Cleveland? Houston?). Or will the IR list be used for some hocus pocus? Will Tolzien collect splinters?

As long as Aaron Rodgers stays healthy.

(3) - Aaron Rodgers, Matt Flynn, Scott Tolzien

WR’s

Jordy Nelson has a fat new contract and is happy. Randall Cobb is going to be next to get a fat, new contract and will be happy. Jarrett Boykins is still # 3 on the depth chart but is looking over his shoulder at rookie Davante Adams, the record setting pass catchers from QB Derek Carr’s (Oakland) tosses. Adams has good size at 6’1” and 215 lbs and has great hands. He will have to adjust to the speed of not only the defenders who will be looking to punish him but Rodgers’ throws. Hometown hero Jared Abbrederis is a Wes Welker clone and was wowing them in camp until he tore a knee up and will be IR’d until next season. That opens the door for Jeff Janis, the 7^th rounder from an unheard of small D3 school who last year had 131 receptions. In a year. Not a career. Janis is a virtual Jordy Nelson clone at 6’3” and 219 lbs and is deceptively fast. His middle slant grab and go against the Rams in pre-season may have been enough for Mike McCarthy to see the 5 WR’s he wants. Camp has been deep with WR’s this year. Some will hook on elsewhere but the best 5 are sticking around.

(5) Nelson, Cobb, Boykin, Adams, Janis IR - Jared Abbrederis PS Myles White, Alex Gillette

RB’s

This one was looking tight until 2^nd year man Jonathon Franklin was forced to retire with a neck

injury. Returning RB DuJuan Harris has recovered from knee surgery and has been an explosive breath of fresh air. He’ll join Rookie of the Year Eddie Lacey and James Starks in giving Green Bay its best RB crop since Hornung and Taylor, maybe even the best stable of RB’s in the NFL. Lacey was the cream of last year’s banner haul and pounded out rookie records for yards and TD’s as a Packer eclipsing John Brockington’s marks. His bruising, punishing style is reminiscent of a young Jerome Bettis. With Lacey in the backfield it will be a pick-your-poison call for the D as to just who exactly do they try to stop. Key on Lacey and Rodgers will shred the defense. Back up into coverage and Lacey will gash the line. Starks has finally found his niche in the Packer offense and was nothing short of brilliant in spelling Lacey last year. His knee high driving running makes it appear that his legs will run off his body but it also puts fear in the heats of a DB who has to try to corral him. Venerable pro John Kuhn  is back; his position has been cemented since he cut Julius Peppers down in the famous 4^th and 8 play against Chicago last year that saw Cobb come down with a Rodgers bomb that sent Green bay to their 3^rd straight NFC North crown and Chicago to the golf courses.

(4) – Lacey, Starks, Harris, Kuhn PS - Raijon Neal

TE’s

The loss of Jermichael Finley to a frightening bruised spinal cord injury that resulted in fusion surgery was an immense blow. Replacing Finley may be impossible but replacing him in the aggregate may work nicely. Andrew Quarless is the incumbent. He’s had a decent camp but Richard Rodgers (#89 photo/ left) may be the guy everyone in the NFL is gushing over come December and January. Brandon Bostick was also looking impressive but he sustained a slight fibular break in his leg that may see him out for 4-6 weeks. Ryan Taylor is a special teams ace and Jake Stoneburner may benefit from an injury to UDFA Colt Lyerla. Lyerla is the young man who was booted from Oregon’s program before running afoul of the law while running away from the law in a cocaine bust. His knee injury allowed TT and MM to place him on the IR and give him a full year to get his football head together. If he can stay clean his talent is undeniable. The Lions took NC’s TE Eric Ebron with the 10th overall pick. Ebron is a pass catcher deluxe at 6’4” and 265 lbs who runs a 4.61 forty and has great hands. Lyerla is a pass catcher deluxe at 6’4” and 247 lbs who runs a 4.62 forty and has great hands. By snagging him as a UDFA this is a long term move that may bear some huge dividends provided Lyerla grows up. The beauty of all this is TT did not waste a draft pick and till got a quality player via the UDFA route. Keeping him off the field but around the facility galvanizes the Packers draft and develop approach. With Lyerla out Jake Stoneburner may just make the cut.

(5) – Quarless, Rodgers, Bostick, Taylor, Stoneburner

OL –

The starting 5 go into the season intact. Almost. JC Tretter had played very well at the C slot until

getting injured against Oakland in pre-season. He will be lost for "...multiple weeks..." according to McCarthy. How many is multiple? That's anyone's guess. LT David Bahktiari is a year older and a full season wiser after shining in emergency duty as a rookie. Josh Sitton and T J Lang anchor the interior while RT Bryan Bulaga has looked impressive coming back form a blown knee. McCarthy felt he found his long term C in JC Tretter until he went down to a knee injury in much the same fashion Bulaga did a year ago. 6^th man Don Barclay will go to the IR so rookie C Corey Linsley has to pull a Bahktiari and step in to play right away. The good news on the OLine is former 1^st round pick Derrick Sherrod has looked terrific after missing almost two years recovering from a horrendous broken leg. Lane Taylor will make the cut but TT may have to go shopping for another C to fill in for Tretter if last year’s PSer Garth Gerhart isn’t up to snuff. For the short haul the Pack rolls the dice with only 2 subs until Tretter's return.

(8) Bahktiari, Sitton, Linsley, Lang, Bulaga, Sherrod, Taylor,  Tretter IR - Don Barclay PS Garth Gerhart PS - Andrew Tiller

The Packers boast one of the elite offenses of the NFL. With the new rules regarding pass interference A. Rodgers might enjoy his greatest season as a pro. Lacey could run wild again. Cobb is poised for a monster year especially out of the slot. The kids – R. Rodgers, Adams and Janis all could factor in large. This will be a fun year to watch this prolific offense put up pinball-like numbers. Just how prolific this offense could be will be revealed right away as the Pack opens the season against the Super Bowl Champion Seattle Seahawks and their imposing defense.

All of the above is true provided one simple thing - As long as Aaron Rodgers stays healthy.
